Federal Employees With Psychiatric Disabilities:
Providing Reasonable Accommodation While Avoiding Agency Liability
Robert Atkins, Attorney, Law Office of Robert Atkins
Heidi Rosenfelder, Attorney, Law Office of Heidi Rosenfelder

The federal government is expected to be a model employer for individuals with all types of disabilities. But with all the misperceptions about psychiatric disabilities, you need to know solid management practices when making decisions involving employees with these disabilities.

Learn from two seasoned attorneys, who use vignettes of actual cases to highlight what agencies did right and wrong during the accommodation process. You’ll gain a clear understanding of what the law requires when interacting with and accommodating employees with psychiatric disabilities — so your agency avoids missteps that lead to costly litigation. Plus, you’ll learn everyday practices that foster a positive working environment for the employees — another way to head off legal action.

In just 90 minutes, you’ll get successful accommodation strategies for even the most complicated situations. Along with practical “do’s and don’ts,” you’ll discover:

              •   How the ADA Amendments Act has changed the approach to
determining whether an employee should be accommodated

              •   Methods to determine whether an employee is a qualified
                  individual with a mental disability

              •   What information can and cannot be shared with HR, agency
                  medical staff and supervisors

              •   Tips for communicating with supervisors and co-workers
                   without breaching medical confidentiality

              •   Plus more!
